Argentina - In The Beginning
by Robin Barnes
A veritable tour de force by the youthful Dante Porta, Argentina was a 1948 rebuild of a FC Belgrano metre gauge 4-6-2 into a four-cylinder compound 4-8-0, which amongst other advances boasted an early form of the gas producer combustion system. This relatively small locomotive proved able to produce over 2000 hp at the drawbar. Sadly, preservation now will not take place but the advances that it represented are not forgotten either in Argentina itself, or elsewhere.
