Argentina - Revival

The Rio Turbio railway (RFIRT) largely has been operated by twenty 2-10-2 steam locomotives built by Mitsubishi in Japan, ten in 1956 and ten in 1963, the second group incorporating from new improvements by Ing. Porta, which raised the horsepower rating from 700 to 1200. There has been a considerable interchange of parts between the locomotives over the years, much of it unrecorded, making accurate identification of individual examples often very difficult and sometimes impossible. However, it is known that this locomotive, now bearing the number 116, is in fact 107, one of the first batch, Mitsubishi 849 of 1956. What is truly important is that it is the first to be restored to running order, and in fact already has been steamed. At Rio Turbio, December 2004.
