| The last new steam locomotives built for London's Metropolitan Railway were six powerful 2-6-4T completed in 1925, based on and utilising parts intended for Southern Railway N Class 2-6-0s, all passing to the LNER during 1937. Here we see former Met/LPTB 111 as LNER 9070, on a freezing December night of 1947, speeding past Neasden with Christmas mail for 'Metroland', the capital's prosperous north-western outer suburb. No.9070 was Armstrong Whitworth 702/1925, withdrawn October 1948. |
