The flexibility and mountain goat sure-footedness of Ephraim Shay's longitudinal shaft and
bevel gear drive locomotive ensured it lasting success with many operators who had to
contend with track of indifferent quality. Between 1880 and 1944 Ohio's Lima Machine Works
built around 2770 examples, several of which were amongst the last steam locomotives in
commercial use in North America. The type found a market overseas also, although it appears
only two came to Europe, one to Austria and the other (Lima 618/1900) to Hickman's Springvale
Furnaces at Bilston, Staffordshire, where it is pictured. It is believed to have been scrapped
about 1912.
