The short Gartverrie branch in central Scotland had very tight clearances, for which
reason the locomotives used along it had their boiler mountings severely cut-down.
This 1949 scene pictures BR 65285 (Cowlairs 1896; NBR 714, LNER 9714 and 5285,
Class J36. Withdrawn 1963) squeezing beneath the former Caledonian/LMS west
coast main line, along which a semi-fast heads south behind one of the CR-type
4-6-0s, which treated unkindly by historians, nonetheless reliably earned revenue
for more than thirty years.
