Tram Stop

Robin Barnes - Railway Art and History

The rain is fast catching up with the tram as it slows to a halt at Bellegem, between Kortrijk (Courtrai) and Moeskroen, in the south of Belgium. The year is about 1960, and the location one of the last, isolated sections of the SNCV ('Vicinal') light rail and tram network. This once had totalled 6000 km of track and operated 3000 motive power units, steam, diesel and electric. At its peak, it was possible to cross the whole of Belgium entirely on SNCV trackage, without once using a main line train.
