Smoke in the Catacombs

Robin Barnes - Railway Art and History

Robin Barnes, Railway Art and History
Originally it passed along the streets of Palma, but in 1931 the 914 mm gauge FFCC de Mallorca rerouted the docks branch through a tunnel beneath the city's cathedral. The line had, for Spain, a comparatively short life of thirty-six years, in contrast to the steam locomotives used on it. About to disappear into the tunnel is one of two 0-6-0 side- tanks, either 4 Menacor or 5 Felantix, Nasmyth Wilson 188 and 189 of 1876. Active for over eighty years, they were not finally cut up until about 1963.
