Isaac Boulton of Ashton-under-Lyne, near Manchester (UK), functioned as a locomotive
hirer between 1858 and 1894. His yard became famous for its innovative reconstructions
of all kinds of mechanical oddities, in a sort of 19th Century 'Scrapheap Challenge'. There
were even nominally new locomotives, such as this diminutive 3.5 ton example of 1860.
Known as Little Grimsby, it is seen here working on the 2 ft gauge tracks belonging to
John Cross' collieries at Wigan, in Lancashire. Rebuilt and regauged more than once,
this adaptable machine eventually finished a long career at the Tow Law Ironworks in
County Durham.
