Paper Tiger

This is a March 1942 proposal by the Derby drawing office of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway for a powerful fast freight and intermediate passenger locomotive. One of a series of twelve designs intended to cover most of the company's post-World War 2 traffic requirements, it would have had three cylinders and 6 ft diameter (1828 mm) coupled wheels. Probably inspired by the successful and similar LNER V2 Class of 1936, it would have been a powerful performer, but post-1945 austerity prevented its appearance and it was destined to remain, sadly, a paper tiger.
