The final two examples of the 842 LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0s were the ones
that really broke the mould. In part this was because of their austere styling,
but it was also because they were equipped with the final, refined version of
British Caprotti rotary cam poppet valve gear, which gave excellent results both
in terms of performance and maintenance. BR 44687, pictured here, was the
last built, at Horwich in 1951. Withdrawal in 1966 was for no reason other than
that BR had - literally - run out of steam.
