Railway Art and History: Sunderland, England

"Clean Air Act? What Clean Air Act?" Even as late as this August 1968 photograph, this was an everyday lunchtime scene at William Doxford's Pallion Shipyard in Sunderland, at which time of day the fleet of crane tank locomotives would be gathered together while their crews had a break. With Joy valve gear, these little engines were a distinctive product of Hawthorn, Leslie & Company and successors, built in batches between 1902 and 1942. The viewer will have to take my word for it, but just visible here are two late R. Stephenson & Hawthorn examples, at left Hendon (7007/1940) and right Southwick (7069/1942).
