Andre Chapelon's careful, scientific approach to steam locomotive design
was inspirational, transforming the performance of many existing types.
Although, sadly, in his own country of France, he was not given the
opportunity to introduce any totally new designs and had to content himself
with rebuilds, albeit with spectacular results, he came very close. After
World War 2 the SNCF Nord and Est regions ordered this 6000 hp three-
cylinder compound Series 152P 2-10-4 freight locomotive. Cylinders were
cast for the first at least, but nothing more, as in 1952 the SNCF halted all
steam locomotive construction.
