Nothing is known of this odd 1067 mm gauge back-to-back twin unit 0-6-2+2-6-0 rack and adhesion design, other than a faded diagram, annotated in Dutch, that survives in present day Indonesia. However, there may be little doubt it was intended for the steeply graded, part rack operated coal railways of West Sumatra. These employed 0-8-2 and 0-10-0 types, but from about 1930 traffic grew substantially and probably something more powerful was requested by the operator, the Dutch Staats Spoorwegen (SS). With driving positions at both ends, two high pressure Yarrow marine water tube boilers, each having two fireboxes with individual automatic stokers, and its mechanical complication, it would have been a shed foreman's nightmare. The originator is not known, but it may have been the joint brainchild of the innovative Dutch builder Werkspoor and the Bureau of Engineering of the State Department of the Colonies.
