The long-wheelbase eight-wheeler, with three-point suspension, able
to cope with the roughest of track, could safely be said to be the locomotive
that built America. Surely there could be no finer example than the
gorgeously decorated Pennsylvania Railroad No.134 Tiger, a Baldwin
product of 1856. One can well imagine how the sight and sound of this
locomotive would have brought reassurance to the isolated communities
spread along the wayside. The details are taken from a beautiful contemporary
coloured engraving of Tiger by L N Rosenthal of Philadelphia.
