The location is imaginary, but the painting salutes the innovation,
style and optimism which characterised the Art Deco period; of
course then all was not well with the world, but nonetheless its
passing may be mourned. So, here we see the harmonious
combination of a 1936 Cord 810 saloon, with standing close by
a 1920 model brightly dressed in the latest style and, towering
above, the Pennsylvania Railroad's mighty pioneer Duplex, No.
6100 (Altoona 1939). Having a 6-4-4-6 wheel arrangement, it
remained unique, partly because it simply was too much for the
job - but it could move! Imagine standing beside the tracks,
the earth shaking, as 304 tons of locomotive trailing 1200 tons
of train thundered past at over 100 mph. Wish I had been there.
